There is a wide variety of forms and dimensions that monitors can take, but if you want to view more of your content on the screen at the same time, then an ultrawide monitor is likely one of the most suitable choices for you. The ultrawide monitors have a broader field of view, which allows the user to see more of the game at once. This makes ultrawide monitors some of the best monitors for gaming. Should it be supported by that game. This not only has a fantastic appearance, but it also has the potential to be beneficial if the game you're playing demands you to search for items quite a bit.

OVERVIEW

Additionally, ultrawide monitors tend to have a very pleasing aesthetic overall. In addition, they are typically somewhat larger, which results in an increased amount of screen space for other content. For example, ultrawide displays are ideal for use in the workplace. You get more screen real estate, which enables you to fit multiple windows onto the screen at the same time without having to make the windows extremely small. This means that everything can still be read.
The rise in popularity of ultrawide monitors in recent years can be somewhat attributed to all of these different causes. But because there are so many options available, you can be confused about which ones to purchase. This guide is intended to assist you in reducing the number of options available.

BUYING GUIDE

What to look for in the best ultrawide monitors

While the answer to this question could change depending on who you ask, there are certain characteristics that an ultrawide monitor absolutely needs to have. If you want to avoid glare, getting a monitor with a higher brightness setting is an excellent idea. Additionally, you need a device that has a high refresh rate in order for your games to be able to support it. These days, a lot of devices are able to support quicker refresh rates.

It is not necessary to have something that has a refresh rate of 240Hz, but having one certainly won't hurt. Having said that, a good number of the most advanced ultrawide displays will come with refresh rates of 144Hz or even 165Hz. Which are perfectly acceptable for a good number of different games. If you play at a really high level of competition, you should probably look at purchasing something that has the highest potential refresh rate. because it will enable you to respond more quickly. On the other hand, monitors with a greater refresh rate and that are ultrawide are typically more expensive. Consequently, this is an important point to keep in mind.

Curved displays are not required for all ultrawide monitors. If you don't have a lot of room on your desk, you might prefer a curved model. Even though an ultrawide monitor will, in any case, take up more of the surface area of your desk, a monitor with a curve may allow for some of that space to be saved. In addition, the curvature will reduce the amount of neck turning that is required of you. That is going to be helpful for you if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer screen throughout the day.

Here is a quick tabular breakdown of some of the greatest ultrawide displays currently available. Names, prices, and links to where you can buy each monitor are all provided. You'll find a brief description of each monitor, along with the pricing and links to purchase them, below the summary table.

How we picked the best ultrawide gaming monitors

The transition from cathode ray tube (CRT) to flat panel display (FPD) monitors was for a long time the most notable improvement in computer displays. Even yet, in the last decade or so, they've sped up their development considerably. Choices are aplenty now. I've been writing about graphics processing units and displays for the past five years, and I've been building my own computers and keeping up with the latest innovations in the field of computer graphics as a hobby in that time as well.

Our monitor testing program, reviews from a variety of publications, and online user reviews, along with our familiarity with display technology, informed our final choices. We scoured the market for intriguing screens that may function in a number of settings. Our recommended displays might cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Things to consider before buying an ultrawide gaming monitor

Picking an ultrawide gaming display requires some careful consideration. By definition, ultrawide displays have aspect ratios that aren't the same as those of a standard 16:9 widescreen television. Side black bars will be present in movies. If an app or game doesn't explicitly support your screen size, it likely will not work properly. Ultrawide monitors need a little more fiddling than the average display, even with apps that should work. These are some considerations to keep in mind while shopping for an ultrawide monitor if the benefits are still appealing.

Aspect ratio

Until the last couple of years, it was just a given that you’d want a standard widescreen display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. But now there are more options. In addition to 16:9, you’ll see lots of 21:9 (ultrawide) and a few 32:9 displays (super ultrawide) displays. Super ultrawide displays tend to be more expensive than ultrawide displays and there are no cheap options: The prices start at $800 and go up rapidly from there. What you go with here comes down primarily to personal preference and budget. If you plan to game on this monitor, chances are that if your game supports 21:9, it will support 32:9 as well.

With that said, many apps and services do not support ultrawide displays. There are a lot of advantages to ultrawide, but that 33% increase in screen space also means that 33% of your screen will be black bars when watching Netflix fullscreen. Most games support 21:9 and 32:9, but it isn’t universal. They’ll still look fine, you’ll just see those black bars again.

Do you want a curved display?

Many consumers, want a curved display, opt for a single ultrawide screen rather than two adjustable panels. The use of a curved screen can make you feel like the game world is all around you, adding a new level of immersion to your gaming experience. It has been discovered that our faces and eyes are not flat. Monitor maker ViewSonic claims that curved monitors, by bringing the entire display to the same distance from our eyes, can help minimize distortion; this is especially true with ultrawide screens, which move the edges of the display even further from our faces. The curved design, according to ViewSonic, also makes these monitors easier on the eyes. They not only save us time by making it so we don't have to constantly move our heads and gaze to the edges of the screen, but they also make the screen look better overall.

However, curved displays take some getting used to. They take more time to configure and fine-tune for certain applications and games. Additionally, they may be more prone to glare than flat panels. The positive and negative effects are subjective and depend on the individual. Check out some curved displays at your nearby electronics store if possible before making a final choice.

Finding the right curve

Before committing to a curved screen, it's important to consider how steeply you want the curve to go. You can get a subtle impression that the screen is wrapping around you with certain curved displays because of their small curvature. Others are shaped like a cockpit seat, with a steep curvature. The radius of a monitor can be used to determine its curvature (R).

Those of us who have forgotten our high school geometry may find it confusing, yet a smaller radius denotes a more dramatic curvature. One of the most deeply curved screens is found in the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, which features a 1000R curve. The typical curvature of ultrawide monitors is between 1500 and 1800R, whereas the highest curvature of extremely gently curved panels is 3000R.

The optimal viewing distance, or how far away from the screen you should sit, is indicated by the monitor's radius. For curved screens, the optimal viewing posture is dead center in front of the screen, so that the whole effect of the curve is seen.

Brightness, color depth, and HDR

When choosing a gaming monitor, there are several factors to take into account beyond the curvature of the screen. While important, several of these display factors take a back seat while choosing from among ultrawide gaming monitors. Even so, it doesn't harm to double-check and compare.

There are three common panel technologies used to create gaming monitors: Vertical Alignment (VA), In-Plane Switching (IPS), and Twisted Nematic (TN) (TN). Most ultrawide screens on the market today use either IPS or VA panels. Panels with in-plane switching (IPS) technology produce more vivid colors, whereas panels with vertical alignment (VA) technology often have higher contrast. Neither type of display is inferior than the other in terms of refresh rate. We were unable to locate any Ultrawide displays that used TN panels. These panels update the fastest, but they have poor viewing angles and color reproduction, making them unsuitable for this application.

Look for a peak brightness of at least 300 nits(cd/m2) if brightness is an issue. If you go any lower, you may have trouble seeing in games with lots of nighttime action. There is a lack of HDR support on ultrawide gaming displays. Only around a third of the ultra-wide displays sold on Newegg are HDR-capable. To add insult to injury, HDR isn't always applied as well as it is in televisions. Windows doesn't have as good of an idea of when to convert between HDR and SDR, regardless of screen size. Consequently, HDR is a wonderful perk, but it shouldn't be the deciding factor in which monitor you buy.

Use case

Even when buying “gaming” gear, not many people use our PCs just for one thing. Are you going to use this computer for gaming primarily or will you also be using it for work? If your monitor will just serve up games and the web, you can purely focus on refresh rate and gaming-focused features. If you’re creating content or using it for office work, you should also consider technical elements, such as color accuracy or blue light reduction. In general, it pays to take a holistic approach to picking out gear, rather than focusing on one specific use, even if that use is more fun.

FAQs

Q: Are ultrawide monitors good for gaming?

Ultrawide monitors can be great for gaming, especially curved displays. A curved display will fill your field of vision more completely and, in theory, requires less head movement to view completely.

Q: Do 4K ultrawide monitors exist?

Not really. The term 4K refers to a specific resolution, 3840×2160, which you can only create with 16:9 displays. Thus, 4K and Ultrawide are two separate categories of display that can’t really meet. There are a few 2160p Ultra widescreen displays, but they have a wider resolution of 5120, so they don’t count as 4K. That said, you could display a 4K image on that screen without distortion.

Q: Is a 34-inch ultrawide monitor big enough?

Definitely. Most displays on this list measure 34 inches, and the only one bigger is classified as a Super Ultrawide. If you’re buying an ultrawide monitor, chances are it’ll be 34 inches.

IN CONCLUSION

An ultrawide gaming monitor can be a great way to expand your desktop without having to use two separate displays if you have the financial means to do so. There is a wide range of alternatives available, ranging from inexpensive daily drivers to high-end monsters. For everyone else, our top and budget picks offer nearly identical advantages, albeit with a fewer number of color space options to choose from. Any one of these choices ought to fulfill the needs of nearly every player out there.
